Students at Oakview and Crestview to receive free meals this year

New Boston ISD, partnering with TISD Food Service, will offer to all students at Oakview and Crestview a healthy, nutritional, free breakfast and lunch this school year.  The cafeterias at New Boston ISD have already made great strides with the improved nutritional quality of meals served in schools. New Boston is proud of this initiative to raise a healthier generation; the rules will ensure that children have access to healthy meals daily. Each child enrolled will be offered, and/or served a free meal that utilizes practical, science-based nutrition standards to ensure children are offered more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains each day.  We are proud to bring this small but helpful economic boost to our families and community.  If anyone has questions or concerns they may contact the school campus at (903) 628-8900 for Oakview or (903) 628-6521 at Crestview.

School spirit at its finest

The Tribune had the distinct privilege this morning to be on hand as two schools joined together for a rare photo opportunity. On the right is Mr. and Miss New Boston High, Meredith Farris and Quinlan Gray, and on the left is Mr. and Miss DeKalb High, Taylor Reed and Tate Breshears. It is always great to see that the bonds of family and friendship are stronger than any rivalry, and we commend these fine students for representing their schools and community in the highest fashion. Thanks also goes to both high schools and school districts for seeing the value of the opportunity.

The tornado was first confirmed by weather spotters near Boxelder in Red River County and from there the storm quickly made its way through Bowie County, sweeping through DeKalb, Malta, New Boston and Hooks before prompting severe weather alerts around Texarkana and on into Arkansas.

Bridge repair near New Boston to begin in March

A steel beam located on the southern side of the Interstate 30 overpass at State Highway 98 near New Boston will be repaired this spring, according to plans approved in January by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

“The southernmost beam has been struck twice recently by oversized loads passing underneath the structure on SH 98,” said Kenny Icenhower, area engineer for TxDOT in Texarkana. “The contractor will repair the beam and repaint it.”

CDM Holdings of New Boston was awarded the contract for the construction on these projects with a bid of $90,000.

Work on the project should begin in March 2016 and take about two months to complete, Icenhower said.
