Commissioners approve pay hike for all county employees

Prince disappointed that parity pay measure will not go to county voters

By Allyson Pebsworth

Staff Reporter

Monday’s meeting of the Bowie County Commissioner’s Court was one several have been patiently awaiting. The biggest agenda item discussed at the meeting was that of the approval of a counter offer extended to a citizens salary committee, pursuant to Legal Government Code, Section 152.072(g) in regards to the previously presented Bowie County Sheriff’s Office “Petition to Increase Salaries”.

The Commissioner’s Court approved a counter offer presented by the committee of a 5 percent pay raise for all county employees, with no Court members in opposition. This increase, along with covering the increase in employee health insurance costs, will require county taxes to be raised by four percent.

Traffic stop yields drug bust near DeKalb

On June 3, 2016 around 10:45 a.m. Bowie County Sheriff’s Deputy Westin Fannin was watching a house in the 100 block of County Road 4265, just south of Hubbard,  that he had prior knowledge was selling narcotics. He observed a small white car leaving this house and stopped it for a traffic violation.

The driver of the vehicle was found to be Matthew Scott Donaldson. While Deputy Fannin was speaking with Donaldson, he noticed that he was nervous beyond the point a normal person would be during an encounter with a peace officer on a traffic stop. When asked, Donaldson denied that there was anything illegal in his vehicle.

Deputy Fannin informed Donaldson at this point of his intent to search his vehicle. As he turned to walk towards the vehicle, Donaldson stopped him to tell him there was a bag in the vehicle containing Methadone. Deputy Fannin recovered this bag and found it contained eight bottles of Methadone that had a total weight of 321.5 grams.

Tornado watch issued for Northeast Texas

Bowie County and all of Northeast Texas, Southeast Oklahoma and Southwest Arkansas is now under a tornado watch just issued by the National Weather Service office in Shreveport. A tornado watch means that conditions are conducive to the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area.

The front that has fostered the need for the watch has already spawned tornadic activity to the west and south of our area, including damaging storms around the DFW metroplex and around Tyler and Athens.

This frontal boundary is expected to move through Bowie County sometime during the afternoon hours and is expected to impact driving conditions.

Watch for updates on the Tribune Facebook page and Twitter feed as more information and warnings are issued by the National Weather Service.
