Maud’s Brynn Sultz honored with Marine Corps award
All-American is a rare accomplishment no matter what comes before or after the title. Maud’s Brynn Sultz was selected by the United States Marine Corps as a ‘Semper Fidelis All-American’ this past Spring.
The Semper Fidelis All-American program is a program in which the selected participants get the opportunity to go through leadership seminars, listen to speakers, and train with actual Marines in team exercises in the nation’s capital. These All-Americans have to be nominated by someone of their school, be involved in a team sports, hold leadership roles in their school and/or community, and must also be a Junior in high school when nominated. After being nominated, they must also write an essay.
Out of thousands of applicants, about 150 were selected this year to have the title of Semper Fidelis All-American. Brynn Sultz was one of those 150. Sadly due to COVID-19, Brynn was unable to travel to Washington D.C., and the entire program was held virtually.
The Semper Fidelis All-Americans are supposed to demonstrate the qualities of a Marine in their own community already. These All-Americans are to show pride, honor, integrity, and leadership within their schools and communities. Brynn does all of these as Maud ISD Athletic Director Josh Turner had this to say,“Brynn Sultz has been the epitome of what Maud Cardinal Athletics is about. She has been a four sport starter, a phenomenal teammate, and an exceptional leader throughout her time as a Cardinal. I know she is going to do great things because of the character she has. There is not a more deserving person to receive this award than Brynn Sultz.”
Coach Turner is not the only one to speak highly of Brynn as Maud High School Principal Joel Windham was honored to laud her efforts as well noting, “Brynn has been an integral part to the success of the Maud School District. She had exhibited unbelievable traits in leadership with her hard work, determination, and relentless desire to represent her community and family in a positive light. She has shown her athletic ability by her being voted Defensive Player of the Year for the 17 2A district in Volleyball. Brynn has also shown her charisma and charm by developing what we now know as “World Record Wednesday,” “Think about it Thursday,” and supplying us with a great Joke for Fridays while she is doing the mundane task of announcements every school day. Brynn has always done her best to carry herself with class when our students travel to events by dressing up for the occasions and also acting like a lady. We are very proud of her for all her hard work and could not think of a better person to be honored tonight.”
Being a leader is not always easy, and being able to handle the parts that are not easy is what makes a leader, a leader. Not only does Brynn know how to be a leader, she also understands that humility is a leadership trait as well.
She states,“I would like to thank Coach Fothergill who nominated me for this, without his nomination and him believing in me I would not have even gotten this opportunity to be a part of this. My family has also supported me and believed in me this entire time, even though I thought it was a long shot throughout this whole process. I am very lucky to have the people in my life that support me like they do. Of course a thank you to the Marines, it is such an honor to be selected.”
The Marines pride themselves on being courageous, honorable, committed, and a leader. Brynn continuously proves that she can be all of these things and Maud ISD Counselor Kayla Harrell had to brag on Brynn herself saying, “You can say so many wonderful things about Brynn Sultz. She has great leadership skills, above average intelligence, outstanding athletic abilities, and an untouchable work ethic. However, her most valuable trait is her impeccable character. She goes above and beyond to help others and does so with a great attitude. Teachers and staff members all enjoy having her in class and in our hallways at Maud ISD. There’s no doubt in my mind that Brynn is going to do great things in life. I’m so proud that she is being honored with this award. It truly defines who Brynn is as a person.”
