Cardinals start Regional Quarterfinals tonight
The Maud Cardinals have advanced to the next round of the baseball postseason, following their series win over Union Grove over the weekend.
The Cards started the best-of-three series with a win 4-1 win last Thursday, but then dropped Game Two by a score of 11-1 on Friday.
In the tie-breaker game on Saturday, the Maud crew showed that they were a determined lineup as they found themselves trailing going into the final frame, but did what they had to do to get the win.
Going into the 7th on Saturday trailing 5-4, Cason Lamb first reached base on a hit-by-pitch, and would then come around to score on an RBI single from Tucker Sanders to tie the game at 5-5.
Sanders would advance to third on a ground ball out from Briley Barron, and then came in to score the eventual winning run on a wild pitch.
Lamb was the winning pitcher for the Cardinals as he went to the hill in the 7th and with two on and one out, the Cardinals turned a double play to end the game and take the Area championship.
At the plate, Barron had a pair of clutch RBI’s in the game and Sanders and Lamb had one each.
The Cardinals will now advance to the Regional Quarterfinals where they are scheduled to play the Rivercrest Rebels. Games are tentatively set for Wednesday and Thursday at Paris Chisum High School. Game time on Wednesday is scheduled for 6 p.m. and on Thursday the first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
