Bears versus Lions-My Prediction

What, do ya’ll think I am crazy or something? I used to make predictions but learned very quickly that prognostication and foretelling the future is not my forte.

What I do know is that this will be a good football game.

One of the oldest rivalries in Texas high school football will take to the field at Lions Stadium tomorrow night and either the New Boston Lions or the DeKalb Bears will go home with the Traveling Trophy.

The Bears make the trip down from DeKalb on a high, with a 30-20 win over Prairiland a week ago in their pocket.

The Lions fell last Friday 20-6 to Hooks.  Will that make them hungry for that first win? Will the emotion of the rivalry and tradition be enough to get them past the Bears?

DeKalb AD and Head Coach Eddy May said this about the game.

“Being a rivalry game, emotions will be running high. We have to play with that emotion, but also turn in play with discipline. Limiting our penalties and not turning the ball over will be determining factors. If we can weather the storm early that a rivalry game usually brings and execute our offensive and defensive game plan, we will have a chance to win.”

The Bears look much better on paper with QB Tristen Jamison having a solid game last Friday and maybe the best running back in Northeast Texas, Jaquan Jackson, fueling the offense.

Jackson accounted for over 300 yards of offense last week, with a line that will open up holes for him again versus New Boston.

The Lions are reeling from the loss of senior leader and quarterback Jacob Bobbitt, so Coach Craig Fant will still be searching for someone to step up and fill Bobbitt’s big shoes. As Coach Herman Boone said in the movie Remember the Titans, “You cannot replace a Gary Bertier,” it will be a huge challenge for Coach Fant to replace Bobbitt.

So again, on paper, the edge goes to the Bears, but this is Texas high school football. Emotion does play a part, so does grit and determination, so when the clock ticks down, either team can claim the coveted trophy.

But you will not get me to say which one it will be!
